Trump: ‘I Could Have Won the Vietnam War in a Week’

Trump: ‘They kept bombing forests for years instead of going after Ho Chi Minh City. I would have won that war in one week.’

Analysis: This statement is a grotesque distortion of history, revealing a profound ignorance of basic geography and military strategy. Trump’s claim that the US should have bombed Ho Chi Minh City is absurd because during the Vietnam War, the city was called Saigon and was the capital of US-allied South Vietnam. The enemy’s capital was Hanoi, in North Vietnam. Bombing Saigon would have meant attacking America’s own ally. Furthermore, the US did conduct extensive bombing campaigns against North Vietnam, including Operation Rolling Thunder (1965-1968) and the Linebacker campaigns (1972), which targeted Hanoi and Haiphong. These campaigns failed to achieve a quick victory. Trump’s suggestion that he could have won in a week ignores the complex nature of the conflict, which involved guerrilla warfare, the support of the Viet Cong in the South, and the political and logistical challenges of the war. His claim is also ironic given that he received five draft deferments during the Vietnam War era, including one for bone spurs, and never served in the military. The statement is a classic example of Trump’s tendency to make grandiose, factually impossible claims about his own abilities, particularly regarding military matters, which he has never experienced firsthand.
