Trump Claims ‘Virtually Total Control’ of the Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump recently stated: ‘We have virtually total control of the Strait of Hormuz.’

Analysis: This claim is characterized by extreme exaggeration and a detachment from geopolitical reality. The Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway located between Oman and Iran, through which approximately 20-30% of the world’s total oil consumption passes. While the United States maintains a significant naval presence in the Persian Gulf through the Fifth Fleet, ‘total control’ is a strategic impossibility in international law and maritime practice. The strait is not sovereign U.S. territory, and any attempt to exert ‘total control’ would constitute a blockade, which is an act of war under international law. Furthermore, Iran maintains a significant military presence along the northern coast of the strait, including anti-ship missile batteries and fast-attack craft, which have historically challenged U.S. and international naval operations in the region. Trump’s rhetoric ignores the sovereign rights of coastal nations and the complexities of international maritime transit, presenting a simplified, megalomaniacal view of U.S. power projection that contradicts the operational reality of maintaining freedom of navigation in a contested maritime environment.
