Trump’s Greenland Oil Fantasy: ‘Our New and Beautiful Greenland’

President Trump on Truth Social: ‘Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland! There are Experts that are saying that the amount of easily available Oil is far greater than that of almost any land, anywhere in the World and, even more importantly, from a Security Purpose in the Defense and Offense of both the United States of America, and Europe, is second to none. Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived. It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the World!’

Analysis: This statement contains multiple factual and rhetorical problems. First, the claim that Greenland is ‘our new and beautiful Greenland’ is a gross misrepresentation of the legal status of the territory. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. While the Trump administration signed a deal with Denmark and Greenland in September 2026 regarding US military presence and defense cooperation, this does not constitute ownership or annexation. Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty, and its government controls its own natural resources. The phrasing ‘our new and beautiful Greenland’ implies a territorial acquisition that has not occurred and is not supported by any public agreement.

Second, the claim that ‘Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin’ is contradicted by recent events. In August 2026, Greenland’s government blocked a US company from drilling, and local authorities have repeatedly stated that they control resource extraction. The Greenlandic government has not granted any new exploration permits since the deal. The US administration may be pressuring Nuuk, but no exploration is ‘getting ready to begin’ without the consent of the Greenlandic government.

Third, the assertion that ‘the amount of easily available Oil is far greater than that of almost any land, anywhere in the World’ is a significant exaggeration. While the US Geological Survey has estimated significant undiscovered oil resources off Greenland’s coast (potentially up to 17.5 billion barrels), these are offshore, in harsh Arctic conditions, and not ‘easily available.’ The cost and technical difficulty of extraction in this region are extremely high, and no commercial production has ever occurred. Experts widely agree that the oil is not ‘easily available’ by any standard.

Finally, the security claim that ‘Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland’ is strategically dubious. While Greenland is geographically relevant for missile defense (the Thule Air Base is a key radar site), intercontinental ballistic missiles can and do travel over the Arctic, but they do not ‘have to come across Greenland’ in a way that makes it a unique defensive chokepoint. The statement overstates the strategic value of the island in a way that serves a political narrative of territorial expansion.
