President Donald Trump said he is considering renaming the Pacific Ocean the ‘American Ocean,’ arguing that only the Atlantic and Pacific were prestigious enough to bear the Trump or America name. He said he even called Google CEO Sundar Pichai about the Atlantic, but was apparently told: ‘Please don’t ask us to do that.’ He then turned to the Pacific: ‘We’re going to call it the American Ocean.’
Analysis: This statement is a prime example of grotesque megalomania and a claim detached from reality. The Pacific Ocean is not a US territorial possession; it is an international body of water bordered by dozens of sovereign nations, including China, Russia, Japan, Australia, and the nations of the Americas. Unilaterally renaming it would have no legal or international standing. The claim that European leaders, specifically Ursula von der Leyen, would be ‘thrilled’ is absurd, as such a move would be seen as an act of American imperial overreach and would be met with widespread international ridicule and opposition, not gratitude. The proposal follows his earlier renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America,’ a move that was also not recognized internationally. This latest idea, however, is on a vastly larger scale and demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of geography, international law, and diplomacy. The fact that he claims to have called the CEO of Google to request the change highlights a belief that a private tech company can unilaterally alter global geographic nomenclature based on a president’s whim, further underscoring the detachment from reality.
