Trump’s ‘Golden Age’ claim collides with inflation data

Trump took to Truth Social to announce that inflation is ‘way down’ and that income for people and companies is ‘way up,’ declaring that ‘the Golden Age of America is upon us.’

Analysis: The claim is contradicted by official data. US consumer prices rose 3.7% year-on-year in September 2026, up from 3.4% in August and 2.4% in January. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% in September alone. Inflation has been above the Federal Reserve’s target for over five years, and the Fed raised interest rates in September for the first time in more than three years. Real average hourly earnings are down 0.7% compared to a year ago, meaning paychecks are losing the race against prices. Adjusted for inflation, Americans’ disposable income actually fell in September, according to Commerce Department data. The statement, made days before the November 3 midterms, presents a reality detached from the economic data affecting voters.
