Trump Claims Neutrality of China and Russia in Iran Conflict

During the G7 summit, Donald Trump stated: ‘I want to thank China, President Xi, I was with him, and he stayed neutral, totally neutral, and I appreciate it. And I would want to thank Vladimir Putin, he was very neutral.’

Analysis: This statement exhibits a significant detachment from the established factual record of the conflict. While China maintained a diplomatic distance, choosing to send an envoy with minimal intervention, the claim that Russia remained ‘very neutral’ is contradicted by intelligence reports. During the height of the U.S.-Iran war, Russia was documented providing active support to Iran, including the transfer of drone components and other dual-use goods via the Caspian Sea, effectively bypassing the U.S.-enforced blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. By characterizing Russia’s active military-industrial assistance as ‘neutral,’ Trump is either engaging in a strategic rhetorical downplaying of Russian involvement to facilitate his current diplomatic ‘memorandum of understanding’ or displaying a profound disconnect from the intelligence provided by his own administration.
