Trump Claims ‘Total Control’ Over Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Tension

Donald Trump recently stated: ‘The United States has complete control over the Strait of Hormuz. I THINK WE WILL MAINTAIN IT! And that control is with us in this room, right? Our naval blockade is called the WALL OF STEEL, and Iran can do nothing about it.’

Analysis: This statement exhibits a high degree of grotesqueness and detachment from the operational reality of the region. While the U.S. maintains a significant naval presence in the Persian Gulf, the claim of ‘complete control’ and the characterization of the blockade as an ‘iron wall’ that has rendered Iran’s military capabilities non-existent is contradicted by ongoing reports of maritime instability and the continued closure of the strait to many commercial vessels. By asserting that Iran has ‘no navy or air force’ and that the IRGC is ‘fleeing,’ Trump employs hyperbolic rhetoric that ignores the asymmetric warfare capabilities—such as drone swarms and anti-ship missiles—that have historically challenged U.S. naval dominance in the area. Furthermore, the claim that the strait is fully under U.S. control is directly contested by Iranian authorities, who maintain that the waterway remains closed until their specific conditions regarding sanctions and the conflict are met.
